Sick

Today has been such a long day. When Rob got home from work this morning, he heard Zane awake in his room. When he checked on him, Rob found him standing next to his crib trying to get in. Deciding it wasn't worth the fight, Rob put him in his crib where he slept for the rest of the night.

Zane was his usual happy self this morning. He ate breakfast as normal and played for most of the morning. When Awma (my mom) called around 10, Zane wanted to answer the phone and talked to her for a few minutes. A little after 11 he started to get whinny and cranky. I felt his forehead and he felt warm. I took his temperature and it was 101. I hate giving (or taking) medicine unless I feel it's really warranted and the kid is miserable. We decided to take a wait and see approach before drugging him. Around noon he lost it and went from whining to crying. At that point, we broke out the Tylenol with Codeine (left over from his surgery). We waited and waited for it to kick in. Within 30 minutes of him taking it, his temperature didn't go down, it went up instead, now it was 103. We put in a call to a friend of ours who works in pediatrics and he suggested we take him to his doctor. Of course it was lunch time and we had to wait until 2 before they were back in the office. His appointment was at 2:30. I took him while Rob stayed home with Cole and Avery. At the ped's office, his temp had risen to 104.4 (yikes!) Dr. Later did a strep test on him-came back negative. So then he did RSV and Flu cultures. Both came back negative. He gave him a dose of Motrin and instructed us that if his temp didn't go down within the hour to head to the hospital for lab work. We went home, picked up Rob and the other kids and headed back to Provo. Rob dropped me, Shalyn, Avery, and Cole off at BYU because they were going to be 'victims' for Amy's EMS class. Then, he took Zane for lab work. Rob said it was horrible, they did a culture on him where the stuck something up his nose and down this throat in addition to drawing blood. I'm not sure who this upset more, Zane or Rob. Rob picked us back up and we all came home. Zane's forehead felt like it was on fire. We took his temp and it was now 104.9. We once again called our friend (who also happens to be our bishop) and he said he'd be over in a few minutes. I quickly put a screaming Zane in the tub trying to get his fever down. We were debating on heading to the ER. Our bishop arrived, and he and Rob gave Zane a blessing. He calmed us down quite a bit and told us to hang tight and wait for our Doctor to call us with the lab results. Through all this, Zane had been screaming and obviously very uncomfortable. When Brett was leaving Zane calmed down and stopped crying. He stayed snuggled on our lap for a little while and then asked to watch his 'Wild Animal' DVD. At last check, his temp is down to 101.6. We still haven't heard back from our Dr. hopefully we will within the next hour. Zane is asleep in his crib (we didn't even bother trying the toddler bed tonight).
