I took all four kids to get their flu shots today. Avery is terrified of shots and whenever she's at the doctor's all she can talk about are shots. Even though she rarely gets them she always panics and stresses that she's going to have to get one. Being that I was taking the kids by myself (Rob had to work today) I didn't tell the three youngest where we were going. As soon as we pulled up to the building our pediatrician's office is in, Avery started freaking out. Am I getting a shot? She asked as she started panicking. We weren't even out of the car at this point. I turned to her and said, "Avery, I haven't said anything about shots." Ok, so maybe that was a little misleading, but it was what I needed to do to get her out of the car.
So we make it into the building and up the elevator. While I was still signing the kids in, the nurse called us back. We all crammed into the little room and Avery asked again if she was going to get a shot. This time I was honest with her and told her yes, she was getting a flu shot. She held it together pretty well at that point. The nurse left the room (to go get the shots) and I started bribing her. I told her if she was brave and didn't cry I would buy her ice cream afterwards. She sat up on the table all ready to go, that is, until the nurse walked back in. Avery took one look at the shots, jumped off the table, and hid behind a chair all while crying hysterically. Shalyn ended up getting her shot first, followed by Zane, who was followed by Cole. Cole cried the least of all the kids (not counting Shalyn who didn't cry at all). We had to pry Avery's hands off the chair and lift her onto the table. It took both Shalyn and I to hold her down while the nurse injected the shot into her leg. That girl can howl! She didn't calm down until we were back in the car. Then, she had the nerve to ask if she could get an ice cream. I don't think so!!!!

Request the flu mist next year.... Awesome and no shots. Request it before you make you appointment so that you are sure they have some on hand. No worth the trauma of the shot when there is a great alternative. (Anyone 2 and older can have it.)
flu mist is great... except if you have asthma or breathing problems. Then they won't give it to you. So Destroy got to suffer through the shot (he has asthma) while he watched his little bro painlessly get the mist. Poor kid! I felt bad for him but not as bad as I feel for Avery. I can't believe how scared she is of shots! Destroy asked the nurse to "do it gently". Ha!
Yeah...the flu mist is definately a great invention. E can't get one because of her early asthma symptoms. If she has been off the neb. for a year she can get it. So far she's been off the neb. since April...so maybe next year!
You are a brave woman! I don't even go near the same room when the twins get their shots! I make Justin do it. Horrible, I know. But I went through enough as it is to get them here!
but what a memory!!! I guess when you look back on it you can roll your eyes and think "oh the drama" that is what I do anyway!! we are skipping the drama this year and going to see what happens! since it doesn't prevent the yearly winter puke fest at my house i've decided not to bother! i'll just send them over to play at your house! ha !
