Cole's Birthday

Newborn Cole
One year and 1 day ago, Cole Ethan Foussat was born. I went in for an elective induction early in the morning on the 27th. We had taken Shalyn, Avery, and Zane over to my sister's house the night before since we had to be at the hospital so early the next morning. It was a pretty uneventful labor. The only 'problem' I had was that my epidural did not work at all. I had heard stories about that happening, but I never really believed it was possible. Two hours before Cole was born they finally took out the first epidural and replaced it with one that worked. I guess when I got out of bed and was walking around the room they finally believed me that it wasn't working.

Cole Coming home from the hospital
Cole was born at 3:45 in the afternoon. He weighed 8lbs 6oz and was 20.5 inches long. Like all my other children, he was born with a head full of dark hair. His siblings came to the hospital a few hours after he was born to meet him.

From the time he was born, he was a terrible sleeper. for the first several weeks, he would only sleep if he was being held. When he was put down, within minutes he'd be awake. It made for many, many sleepless nights and a variety of sleeping arrangements. When he was about 2 weeks old, we put an end table next to my side of the bed. He slept on the table, in a boppy pillow. A few weeks after that, he started sleeping in his car seat. Then, he was moved to a pack-n-play for the next several months. He was consistentaly up every 2-3 hours at night until he was 10 months old.

Cole slept in our room the longest of all of our kids. The main reason being we planned for the boys to share a room. Beginning last November (07) we started trying to transition Zane from his crib to the toddler bed. He didn't go for it. He wanted the crib. So we kept Cole in the pack-n-play in our room and Zane in his crib. Finally we'd had it and were ready for Cole to move in with Zane (who still wouldn't give up the crib.) Cole wasn't crawling yet, so we put him in the toddler bed in their room and Zane was in the crib. A few months ago, Zane finally moved out of the crib and Cole moved in. However, quite often the boys sleep in the crib together.

Cole now sleeps through the night most nights, except for when he loses his paci and needs help finding it. He's such a happy, content baby. We feel so blessed to have him in our family.

For his birthday yesterday, his aunt Laura and her baby Miles came to celebrate. Laura's husband and 2 older boys were off skiing for the day. I made Cole clown cakes and he loved them. He went straight from cake to bath.

I love first birthdays. I might have a solution for Cole losing his pacifier at night. One of my friends hot glued the back of her son's paci to the mouth of a smaller stuffed animal. That way when he loses it as night all he has to do is look for the stuffed animal (a little bigger and easier to find than the paci) and put it back in his mouth. He's only 8 months and can find it by himself.
