The girls both started school last Wednesday. Shalyn is in 9th grade and Avery is in 1st grade. Both girls are going to the same school they went to last year. Shalyn is in her last year of junior high. It's weird here, Jr. High goes from 7-9 grade and high school is 10-12. In CA were Rob and I grew up Jr High was 6-8 and high school was 9-12. Next year Shalyn will go to the brand new high school that just opened this year.
Shalyn's first class of the day starts at 7am. When LDS kids begin 9th grade, the church offers a scripture study class called seminary designed just for them. Again, growing up in CA things were done differently there than they are here in UT. Both Rob and I (well Rob only sorta) went to seminary early in the morning (6am). But, since there are so many Mormons in Utah the kids have a option of having release time from school and taking seminary as an elective during their school day. Shalyn is already taking spanish as an elective and wanted to be able to take cooking as well, so she opted to take a seminary class before school starts. In her case, it begins at 7am. Since she has to be at school earlier than other kids, she can't ride the bus to school but we've got a car-pool going with two other families in the neighborhood. She enjoys school and does really well. Her only 'bummer' so far this year is she has first lunch and most of her friends have 2nd lunch.
Avery was so excited to be a 'grader' (as she calls it) this year. I tried talking her into letting me go to first grade and she staying home with the boys. She quickly said, 'NO WAY!" She thinks she's hot stuff to be able to buy school lunch and eat in the cafeteria. She loves her teacher and her class. This year she and her friend Avorie are riding their bikes to and from school. (Their school is 3 blocks from the house.)
I can't believe how fast the summer went. Before I know it, halloween will be here followed by snow, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.
