Avery's amazing ears!

Avery has an incredible gift, she has perfect pitch.  What that means is she can hear a sound and tell you exactly what note it is and she is right every single time.  This isn't something she has learned or was taught, it's just the way she is.  She told me one morning that her alarm clock is a B-flat. LOL.  You can make a sound and ask her to identify it and she will.  It's amazing.  She can hear a song and sit down on the piano and play it.

Several weeks ago, she came up to me and told me she wasn't hearing very well.  My internal alarms started going off, after going through what we have with Zane and his hearing this year I wasn't going to ignore it.  Zane and Cole had IEPs coming up, so I was going to talk to the district audiologist about Avery's concerns.  Dr. Bown requested that I bring Avery to see her for a hearing check.  The first test showed she had negative pressure in her ears.  The hearing test showed in her left ear she wasn't hearing as she should.  The negative pressure suggested she was possibly getting over an ear infection.  Dr. Bown wanted to recheck her ears in a few weeks after the infection had cleared up.

Three weeks later we returned for a follow up visit.  The night before our appointment I asked Avery how her ears were.  Her answer made me laugh..."oh, about 10% better."  Such a funny answer coming from a 9 year old.  The next day, Dr. Bown asked Avery how her ears were and Avery gave her the same answer.  The Dr. laughed and said, "I'm going to write that down."  The hearing tests were repeated and guess what?!?!  Compared to the first tests she had her hearing was 10% better.  I have never met anyone, let alone a kid who is so in tune with her ears!

As a side note, she does have a mild hearing loss in the really high frequencies in her left ear.

THAT IS AMAZING!! My girls and I can't even sing at the right pitch. Glad it wasn't anything serious to damage that perfect hearing.
